Getting The Right Car For The Right Price
We seem to be under the illusion sometimes in Australia that we’re not natural hagglers. Like it’s not part of our culture. Most people seem to think that asking for a discount on a new product is somehow not right. That’s how much the item costs and that’s how much you’re going to have to pay for it. Well, it’s not true. There’s always a bargain to be had. You might just have to work for it.
The bottom line in any transaction is that the seller is trying to make a profit – out of your hard-earned cash. Now, don’t take it personally, it’s just what they do. But that doesn’t mean you should let them get away with it. The gap between how much the seller gets the item for and how much they sell it to you for represents their profit margin. There’s no law saying that some of that profit shouldn’t be yours.
Believe it or not, the same thing works for brand new cars. If the new Dodge® Nitro has caught your eye recently (and you’re not the only one), then just imagine picking that up for a bargain price.
Here’s how you do it. Firstly, don’t get sucked in to discussing any kind of financing options to begin with. You’re simply there to discuss the price of the vehicle. This is when a bit of research comes in very handy. You should ideally know the invoice price of the car. That’s the price the dealer got the car for in the first instance. Now you’re free to negotiate up from their bottom line not down from yours. Casually mention that you’re ready to buy the car today, for the right price of course. Watch the dealer’s eyes light up when they realise they could be making a sale right there and then.
All the time you’re haggling, you need to remember that you hold all the cards. It’s a game of cat and mouse and you’re not just any old cat. You’re a black panther. And a hungry one. The dealer needs you far more than you need them. They need to make the sale, that’s what their business is built on. So make an offer and wait for them to come back to you. When they do, you’ve engaged and you’re just a few steps away from picking up a stunning Nitro, at an even more stunning price.
If all this seems a little scary, just think of it like a bit of fun. It’s nothing more than a game. You know the dealer is not going to sell if it doesn’t make them any money; you’re just trying to keep the number small. Nobody loses. In fact, everyone wins. Especially you if you get to drive away in a brand new Dodge Nitro.
