Millions of years ago, our genetic ancestors crawled out of the primordial soup and onto the land. Ever since then, animal life has been evolving to cover the ground on land as fast as possible. Naturally, some animals were blessed with an abundance of speed, either as a hunting tool or to protect themselves form hunters. Mankind evolved along a different path (although looking at Usain Bolt perhaps we’re finally catching up). But we were blessed with something even more precious: brains.

It might have taken a few thousand years (we had other stuff on, like cave painting and medieval witch hunts) but we eventually got round to developing the engine. Our increasing understanding of the laws of physics allowed us to fine tune these engineering skills. Then finally, one day, we created the most perfect combination of man’s engineering capabilities to date: the motorcar.

There is something that is so natural about the car. Some kind of higher synergy that we can’t fully understand. It’s about more than a simplistic need for speed; it’s about our collective strive for progress. Just look at Dodge® Nitro SXT to see how far we have come.

Maybe it’s due to this synthesis of man and machine but every now and then we have these moments behind the wheel that can only be described as euphoric. It doesn’t always occur at significant times either. The first time we drive after passing our test is exciting for sure. But these moments are different. It’s a feeling of complete freedom, when everything just seems to fall into place perfectly: the right song, the right view, the right car.

Fortunately, living in Australia, perhaps we experience these moments more than people in other countries. Our vast expanses of countryside and endless roads are certainly liberating.

Now, of course, there are moments behind the wheel that can be acutely frustrating. We’ve all been stuck in traffic jams. But perhaps this frustration comes from the stymieing and stifling effect of not being allowed to drive. And besides, these moments of irritation are more than made up for by life’s great driving moments.
